Mistake #1: Turning to swipe files

Swipe files are emails, captions, ad copy, sales pages, etc. that you can copy-and-paste, tweak to suit your brand, and publish. They make the writing process fast. Well, so long as you don’t get caught up in too much customization.

The problem is that if you don’t spend the time customizing the copy to suit your unique voice then you will sound like everyone else who is using those swipe files. You might even mess up your SEO because your content is so similar to other pages out there.

On the other hand, if you do spend the time customizing it… what’s the point? You might as well have written it yourself!

Mistake #2: Hiring a copywriter

The other option is outsourcing the writing to someone else. The biggest problem with that is that you will have to spend a bunch of time up front getting your copywriter on the same page as you. That is, if you find a copywriter who is a good fit and talented enough to mimic your voice.

Too many entrepreneurs have learned the hard way that if a copywriter doesn’t prioritize learning your voice and vision inside and out, what they write for you will fall flat. Even the most technically optimized copy will never convert as well as your authentic communication.

Think about it: When was the last time you bought something that was not either from a faceless massive company like Amazon OR a small business with a CEO who’s face you know?

People buy from people. When the words you put out don’t sound like they’re coming from you customers will look elsewhere for that personal touch.

There is a solid, tested process for writing engaging content. Every successful entrepreneur uses templates whether they realize it or not. Often they develop these patterns through trial-and-error and gut-checks, but that’s time consuming. You don’t have to waste time trying to find your own way.
