Writing for Your Business Doesn’t Have to be Hard
Writer’s block isn’t caused by not knowing what to write so much as not knowing how to write it.
How many times have you had a clear objective, a prompt even, and still sat staring at that blinking cursor wondering how to begin? Stop starting from zero. There is a proven structure to every successful piece of content or copy out there and you can learn to leverage the power of those proven structures.
At Civilized Animal Productions we call these Story Templates.
Time is an entrepreneur’s most valuable resource
It’s so easy to waste time analyzing your copy, trying to figure out the best way to word every single sentence on the page. How much time do you spend creating captions or assessing articles? And don’t get me started on the long intense process of crafting sales copy.
Too many entrepreneurs make one of two mistakes when they realize how much time they’re wasting—some make both!
Mistake #1: Turning to swipe files
Swipe files are emails, captions, ad copy, sales pages, etc. that you can copy-and-paste, tweak to suit your brand, and publish. They make the writing process fast. Well, so long as you don’t get caught up in too much customization.
The problem is that if you don’t spend the time customizing the copy to suit your unique voice then you will sound like everyone else who is using those swipe files. You might even mess up your SEO because your content is so similar to other pages out there.
On the other hand, if you do spend the time customizing it… what’s the point? You might as well have written it yourself!
Mistake #2: Hiring a copywriter
The other option is outsourcing the writing to someone else. The biggest problem with that is that you will have to spend a bunch of time up front getting your copywriter on the same page as you. That is, if you find a copywriter who is a good fit and talented enough to mimic your voice.
Too many entrepreneurs have learned the hard way that if a copywriter doesn’t prioritize learning your voice and vision inside and out, what they write for you will fall flat. Even the most technically optimized copy will never convert as well as your authentic communication.
Think about it: When was the last time you bought something that was not either from a faceless massive company like Amazon OR a small business with a CEO who’s face you know?
People buy from people. When the words you put out don’t sound like they’re coming from you customers will look elsewhere for that personal touch.
So what’s an entrepreneur to do?
There is a solid, tested process for writing engaging content. Every successful entrepreneur uses templates whether they realize it or not. Often they develop these patterns through trial-and-error and gut-checks, but that’s time consuming. You don’t have to waste time trying to find your own way. You can learn to recognize proven templates and start using them to save time now.
But don’t stop there! You can learn how to create your own templates so your people will hear you in every single thing you write.
Here’s how much time templates can save you:
Paul Alan Aspen is a professional writer and editor. He said that he feels foolish any time he tries to write something without a template because of how much time he wastes reinventing the wheel.
The first time Jessica used a set of templates she drafted five emails in 30 minutes—a task she said would have usually taken her upwards of 5 hours.
Another student reported similar numbers. She wrote five emails in about 10% of the time she would have spent otherwise.
You have two options:
Figure out a template yourself or have a professional help you.
